In 2014 Telkom received the following awards:

Telkom again named as SA’s best broadband operator

Telkom was named South Africa’s best fixed broadband service provider and mobile broadband operator for 2014 at the annual MyBroadband Conference in September. This was the fourth consecutive year that the company has been recognised as the best fixed broadband service provider, and the third year as best mobile broadband provider. The awards are based on the ratings of over 3 000 broadband users, who rate the services on value for money, network quality and billing and support.

IRAS rates Telkom top in ICT sector for 2014 sustainability reporting

Telkom’s 2014 Integrated Report was rated the best in the ICT sector in an assessment conducted by Integrated Reporting Assurance Services (IRAS). Using its sustainability data transparency index, IRAS awarded Telkom a score of 64%, which was significantly higher than the scores of other ICT companies rated, including the two major mobile network providers. Consequently, Telkom won the IRAS award for top sustainability reporting company in the ICT sector for 2014.

Telkom wins 2014 Sunday Times CSI Award

On 28 October 2014, Telkom received the 2014 Sunday Times Corporate Social Investment Award, part of the annual Sunday Times Top 100 Companies Awards. This accolade went to Telkom on the strength of the impact and sustainability of two major enterprise development projects that we support, namely the Bandwidth Barn ICT incubation programme and Absa Enterprise Development Centres. The yardstick used to measure the impact and sustainability of the two projects was the Who Owns Whom BEE scorecard, which is applied to all JSE-listed companies.

Mobile team is the best Service Management Team of 2014

The Telkom Mobile Service Management team was named Service Management Team of the Year at the annual award of the South African chapter of the IT Service Management Forum (itSMF). The award was for the team’s service management improvement programme, aimed at enhancing the customer experience. The itSMF is an independent and internationally recognised forum for IT service management professionals, with over 50 chapters worldwide.


Maritime Services receives award for Cape-to-Rio race rescues

The Royal Cape Yacht Club, organisers of the Cape-to-Rio race, has recognised the contribution that Telkom Maritime Radio Services played in the rescue of yachts in distress during violent storms that struck the 2014 race. The commodore of the club presented an award to Telkom’s Dirk Thiart and John Prinsloo at an awards ceremony in June 2014, when the South African Navy, Maritime Sea Rescue Coordination Centre and National Sea Rescue Institute also received awards for their role in the rescues. Telkom Maritime Radio is a vital part of South Africa's safety-at-sea infrastructure, using sophisticated electronic equipment to monitor South Africa's coastline.

Nkonki SOC Integrated Reporting Awards

Telkom received the following at the Nkonki SOC Integrated Reporting Awards:
  • A rating and overall winner of the “Ethical Leadership and Corporate Citizenship” category (certificate and trophy)
  • A rating for the “Governance of Risk” category (certificate)
  • A rating for the “Governing Stakeholder Relationships” category (certificate)
  • B rating and 3rd place winner for the overall Integrated Report (trophy)
  • C rating for the “Integrated Reporting and Disclosure” category (certificate)

Top Employer certification awarded

In August 2013, The Corporate Research Foundation awarded the Top Employers Certification to Telkom. This is an accolade granted only to organisations that achieved the highest standards of excellence in employee conditions. The Institute, which is a global organisation with its headquarters in the Netherlands, commended Telkom for its continued efforts towards culture transformation and learning and development opportunities.


Maintaining our status as best broadband service provider

Telkom was named "Best fixed broadband service provider in SA" and "Best mobile broadband operator in SA" at the annual MyBroadband Conference in October 2013. This was the third consecutive year that we received the fixed broadband award and the second year as best mobile broadband provider.


Standing out among SOEs for empowered procurement

Among state owned enterprises (SOEs), Telkom has outperformed its peers for B-BBEE compliance and enterprise development. In August 2013, the Chartered Institute of Purchasing & Supply and the State Owned Enterprises Procurement Forum presented two procurement awards to Telkom. One was the award for Most Empowered SOE in Compliance to B-BBEE and the other was the Best Supplier and Enterprise Development award.


Integrated report rated excellent at IRAS

At the 2013 workshop of Integrated Reporting and Assurance Services (IRAS), Telkom was awarded a Certificate of Excellence in the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) category. The award confirmed the usefulness of the quantitative sustainability information provided in the 2012 Telkom Integrated Report, particularly for comparative analysis.


Cybernest IT service management earns global certification

The IT service management that Telkom Cybernest uses to support Basic Hosting received ISO/IEC 20000-1:2011 certification during 2013. This certification is based on international IT service standards and is valid for three years. It was granted after 18 months of preparation and the successful completion of two full audits, which included site visits at Cybernest data centres.


e-Sa'plaia awards for Supplier Relationship Management 7.0

Enterprise software company SAP has applauded Telkom for excellence and innovation in implementing the Supplier Relationship Management 7.0 application. For this, Telkom received two e-Sa'plaia awards, one being a silver award for quality and the other an SAP global delivery innovation award. The project was selected for these accolades after being reviewed by an external audit group and an independent international evaluation team.


Telkom Touch wins silver Assegai award

Telkom's personal lifestyle services programme for employees, Telkom Touch, was awarded the silver trophy in the employee relationship marketing category at the Assegai Integrated Marketing Awards in November 2013. The programme has helped thousands of employees to maintain a work-life balance and provided valuable lifestyle services, including homework assistance for children, access to financial consulting and legal services, emergency assistance and a 24-hour health helpline, among many others.

SRM project

Telkom has won two awards for the highly successful implementation of our SAP Supplier Relationship Management 7.0 application:
  • For excellence in implementation and outstanding effort, the 'e-Sa'plaia' project won a Silver award in the medium implementation category from SAP Africa
  • For meeting and exceeding five criteria, including innovative use of the solution and clear business benefits and user adoption, e-Sa'plaia was recognised as a 'SAP Innovation' Global Delivery project. This recognition, based on reviews by an external audit group and an independent SAP evaluation team, is given to a select group of projects internationally
 
As a result of the project, Telkom's entire procurement process is now fully automated, including spend analysis, catalogue management, self-service procurement and centralised contract management.

Best fixed broadband supplied

Telkom has once again showed its prowess in the South African broadband industry. For the second year running, we won the Best Fixed Broadband Service Provider for our upgraded 10Mbps service.

Among SA’s top 10 best employers

In 2012, for the third year running, Telkom was ranked among South Africa's top 10 employers in the annual BEST Employer™ campaign of the Corporate Research Foundation (CRF) Institute. This year, we were ranked seventh overall in the category for medium, large and giant organisations. We received commendation for our training and development and our development of succession pools.

Design certification

In August 2012, the Uptime Institute of New York awarded Tier III design certification to the NBSC 2 data centre of Cybernest, our data centre operations. This ranking recognises the data centre’s concurrently maintainable site infrastructure and its 99.982% availability.

In top 3 most desirable navbar-brands to work for

Telkom was voted one of the top three "Most desirable navbar-brands to work for" in the 2012 Sunday Times Top Brands survey. The company also made the top 10 in two other categories, namely navbar-brands that have done most for the environment and for community upliftment.

Sports industry award

Our rural Splash programme won Gold in the Community Programme category at the Virgin Active Sports Industry Awards. The programme promotes water safety among rural South Africans. It is one of the Learn to Swim initiatives of Swimming South Africa, which Telkom has supported for many years.

Public sector excellence award

Telkom received a Gold Award from for community engagement. We also received two silver awards, one for leadership and the other for excellence in the communications sector.

Green excellence award

For the innovative use of green technology, Telkom’s Cybernest was named the winner of the 2011 South Africa Green Excellence in Technology Innovation Award in the Data Centre Market.

"Through their commitment to innovation and the environment, Cybernest has managed to deliver a data centre facility that is on par with the top 10% energy-efficient data centres in the world," said the Frost & Sullivan assessment. "In addition, the company has managed to not only leapfrog its competitors ... but also pass cost savings to their customers while reducing their carbon footprint."

The Green Excellence Award was presented to Cybernest after it earned the highest scores for technology, business commitment and environmental accountability.

The judges praised Cybernest for saving 4.7 kWh of power per year, which is the highest energy saving in the data centre market.


Top 10 African women in ICT

In honour of women's day in South Africa, ITNewsAfrica profiled 10 leading women who have made significant contributions to Africa’s Information Communication Technology (ICT) sector and occupy high profile positions in this fast paced, and sometimes cut-throat industry. 

The ICT industry provides endless opportunities for Africans to advance their careers and although it is still largely male-dominated, there are women that have made great strides in changing the face of the industry on the continent.

Nombulelo Moholi was voted in the Top 10 of most powerful women in the sector.


Top empowered company

We also featured in the 2011 Financial Mail Top Empowered companies’ survey. Overall, Telkom was ranked 54 out of 100,and came in seventh out of 10 among ICT participants.


Best employer accreditation

The Corporate Research Foundation (CRF) annually runs the BEST Employers™ SA campaign. Selection is driven by a methodology that involves researching and identifying the best companies to work for based on a number of factors: the employment framework offered to employees i.e. pay and benefits, working conditions, career development, training and development as well as the overall employment experience from a corporate culture perspective. 

In 2011 Telkom was awarded the prestigious “Best Employer” accreditation, and was ranked 4th in the “large size employer” category. In the previous year we were  ranked 9th.


Progressive company of the year

In January 2011, the National Empowerment Rating Agency certified Telkom as a level 4 contributor to BBBEE, with value-added supplier status, which allows customers and partners to recognise 110% of their procurement spend for BBBEE with Telkom.

The achievement was to mark the progression of the company’s 2007 BBBEE scorecard rating as a level 6 contributor status.


Global innovation award

Expand Networks, the leader in optimizing WANs for branch office consolidation and virtualisation, together with Africa's largest Telco provider, Telkom SA , was jointly honoured at the Global Telecoms Business Innovation Awards, winning the prestigious prize for Wide Area Network Optimisation.

Telkom and Expand Networks' winning project successfully deployed a managed WAN optimisation service for retail giant SPAR Group, improving performance levels, reducing latency and easing congestion of satellite links that had composed the efficiency of SPAR’s applications and services. 


Gold community contributor

The Department of Social Development has awarded the Telkom Foundation level 3 community contributor status on the National CSI Registrar's Public Recognition Platform.

The Telkom Foundation's contributor status reflects good corporate governance.

Business and arts sponsorship award

Telkom won our first Business Day/Business and Arts Sponsorship Award (BASA) in the category "International Sponsorship: For a company bringing an international arts project to South Africa." Telkom's first partnership with a theatre company brought a major South African story "The Lion King" home, demonstrating its engagement with South Africans across all communities.

Top empowerment companies

Telkom SA Limited took the lead in the procurement ranking in the 2008 Top Empowerment Companies (TEC) by survey of 2008 by Financial Mail.

Global Business Coalition award

Telkom was honoured by the Global Business Coalition (GBC) as a recipient of the GBC Award for Business Excellence on HIV/AIDS in Workplace Testing and Counselling for our Thuso Program.

American Society for Training and Development

Our Centre for Learning was awarded the BEST award by the American Society for Training and Development (ASTD), an organization representing more than 70 000 professionals in workplace performance in more than 100 countries.
